It’s been really hard for me to think of what I’m grateful for this Thanksgiving. It would be really easy for me to end this day without ever trying to think of what I’m grateful for. However, if I have proven anything to myself this year, it’s that I’m not a quitter.
So, here we go.
I’m grateful for music; especially for the soulful guidance of Brandi Carlile, the carefree fun of Taylor Swift, and the bluesy melodies of the Rolling Stones. You have been literal music to my ears.
I’m grateful for those that inspire laughter; especially for the cast of Saturday Night Live (past and present), security blanket shows like 30 Rock, and writers like Nora Ephron for being a source of humor and comfort when I didn’t think laughter was possible.
I’m grateful for my friends; especially for those friends who have made their presence known. I know it’s not been easy to be my friend, but you have made it very easy to be yours.
I’m grateful for those who take care of me; especially for the doctors and nurses who have seen me through some extremely difficult medical prognoses and have never let me give up hope.
I’m grateful for those who love me; especially my husband, Michael. You have shown me this year what true love is. Thank you for never, ever leaving my side. I love you too.
I’m grateful for my family; especially for the ways you have chosen to remember our Dorothy. Your words, flowers, mementos, and offerings have helped to keep her alive.
I’m grateful for my daughters. Both of them. Equally.
Dorothy, you are missed and loved every moment of every day. Thank you for introducing me to motherhood. I feel so privileged to have been with you for your whole life.
Frances, your arrival is eagerly anticipated. Thank you for showing me that I am capable of loving even more than I thought was possible. I can’t wait to meet you.
Finally, I’m grateful that after all this year has brought, I can still make this list.
